Press Release

HMS FLIRT

Stornoway Historical Society recently acquired a photograph of HMS 'Flirt' which was stationed at Stornoway from 1876 to 1878 and was used as a training ship prior to the Royal Naval Reserve Base at Battery Point being built.

The Society felt it was appropriate that Stornoway Port Authority should be gifted the picture and it was presented to the Chairman, Iain Macleod by Mrs Jessie Murray on behalf of the Historical Society.

Mr Macleod said that the Port Authority were delighted to receive this addition to their photograph collection. "We have recently begun to record the history of our organisation which is the oldest statutory body in the Western Isles and we appreciate all the assistance we have received from Stornoway Historical Society on the project", he said, "The Society is to be commended for all the hard work it puts into preserving the history of the town".
