NEWS RELEASE

14 AUGUST 2006

Stornoway Port Authority has again appealed to all harbour users to desist from disposing of waste materials damaging to the marine environment.

Speaking at the AGM of the Western isles Fishermen's Association in Lochmaddy on Saturday, Port Authority Chief Executive John J. Maclennan referred to a recent example where four full five gallon containers of used oil were found in the Harbour along with a discarded sleeping bag.

Presently, 12 full bags of litter were being recovered every week from the Harbour.

Commenting, John J. Maclennan said "The Port Authority would remind all harbour users that it is illegal to dump any waste at sea. So far this summer the Port Authority has removed some 60 tons of discarded trawl warps from the harbour anchorages and over 300 bags of litter.

There is no excuse for disposing of oil or waste at sea as the Port Authority provides a daily service to all users for the collection of all waste materials including used oils".
