ENHANCED
SECURITY MEASURES
The
Port Authority has now completed the installation
of additional security measures, as required by
TRANSEC during their International Ship and Port
Security Audit in July 2006.
As
part of the audit findings, TRANSEC had some concerns
over the adequacy of the security fencing on the
No. 2 Pier, being the Ports main Hazardous Cargo
Berth for the import of Petroleum and LPG products.
To
ensure continued compliance with the ISPS requirements,
the Port Authority subsequently installed fencing
extensions up to the required height, plus some
new chevaux-de-frise (fantails) at pier edges,
in line with TRANSEC recommendations.
In
current climate, Port and Airport Security is
of critical importance with TRANSEC, the security
division of the Department of Transport. As such,
the Ports industry is subject to periodic audits,
to determine if current port operations reflect
the best practice as laid down in the ISPS regulations.
Overall, TRANSEC were satisfied with the infrastructure
installed at Stornoway Harbour, currently operating
at Security Level 1, with hardware in place to
step up to Level 2, if required by TRANSEC .
