FERRY
TERMINAL
Following
a recent inspection visit by members and officials,
Stornoway Port Authority Board is hoping to carry
out some internal upgrading of the Ferry Terminal
Building as it approaches the tenth anniversary
of opening to the travelling public. Among other
things the Board is looking to replace the present
public seating with a modern and more comfortable
type of furnishing, and to install additional
lighting in the roof space along similar lines
to that at An Lanntair to enhance the external
appearance and prominence of the building.
Generally
the building has worn extremely well and still
retains a fresh appearance internally notwithstanding
the large numbers of people who use the facility.
Recently
the Authority installed a link canopy between
the covered walkway leading from the Terminal
Building and the ship's covered gangway at a cost
of £40,000, and passengers can now embark
and disembark the ferry without being exposed
to adverse weather conditions
Commenting
Chief Executive John Maclennan said "I am sure
like me; most people will find it hard to believe
the Ferry Terminal will have been open for ten
years in April. Since then the ferry has berthed
almost 7000 times, approximately 1.7 million passengers
have used the facility, some 450,000 cars and
4,500 coaches without any major incidents involving
the public"
A
report of costs and possible sources of funding
will be submitted to the March Board Meeting of
the Authority.
The
Authority would be pleased to consider any proposals
from members of the public regarding enhancement
of the premises.
