AWARD TO SAIL HEBRIDES

PORT AUTHORTIY WELCOMES NEW BUSINESS

Stornoway Port Authority Board at a recent meeting approved of the application by Hebridean Seaweed Company Ltd to cut and extract seaweed within the limits of Stornoway Harbour subject to certain conditions. Members were informed that the newly formed company is going to erect a processing plant and factory at Arnish Point and hoped to employ 8 or 9 persons initially. The bulk of the harvested seaweed for processing at the Arnish plant would come from the coastline of Lewis and Harris. In approving the application, the Board noted that the company had consulted extensively with other environmental and heritage agencies and had the necessary statutory consents in place. All of the harvesting would be carried out in a sustainable manner.
