THOR
HEYERDAHL
The
German flagged Sail Training Vessel 'Thor Heyerdahl'
attracted a great deal of interest whilst berthed
at Stornoway Harbour 's, Esplanade Quay today.
The
triple masted schooner was built in Holland in
1930, and further re-furbished in the early 80's
to make it more functional for its current role.
During
the summer months, the vessel sails round Europe
, crewed by some thirty 12-16 year olds, supported
by an adult crew of eighteen. The voyages are
used to promote the personal development of these
youngsters as part of an adventure experience,
whilst learning about seamanship, meteorology,
astronomy and conservation.
In
the winter, the ship becomes flag ship for the
German-based High Seas High School, taking thirty
students in their late teens on a six month voyage
to the south Atlantic and Central America .
The
ship arrived from Falmouth this morning and is
expected to sail for Faeroe Islands on Saturday.
