Press Release

6 SEPTEMBER 2006

Stornoway Port Authority Board has refused an application from the Hebridean Brewing Company to operate from the Old Maritime Buildings at Number 1 Pier.

The Board felt unable to consider the Brewing Company's proposal as all of the Number 1 Pier area was required for Harbour Operational Purposes.

HARBOUR DAMAGE

Members of Stornoway Port Authority Board were told of damage incidents around the Harbour at the 31 August 2006 meeting.

Harbour Master Captain Torquil Macleod reported that the large bollard at the north end of Cromwell Street Quay had been snapped off from its base after having been struck by a forklift truck. The driver of the forklift has accepted liability for the damage.

In a separate incident, structural damage was caused by a vehicle to the masonry at the main doorway of the Port's Fish Mart, Stornoway.

Enquiries are ongoing and the Board would appeal to any persons who witnessed the incident to come forward with information.

RNLI ACCESS

Stornoway Port Authority Board has approved of an application from the local RNLI Branch to provide an access gate and stairway from the Lifeboat Shop on Cromwell Street down to the Lifeboat Station Building and Lifeboat Berth.

The gateway will be used only by RNLI personnel and will be key pad controlled.

NEW AGREEMENT FOR BUS COMPANY

Stornoway Port Authority Board is to enter into a new 5 year Agreement with Scottish Citylink Coaches Limited in respect of the Ticketing Office and Baggage Handling Facility at the Port's Ferry Terminal.

The new agreement will run for 5 years from April 2007 to April 2012.

PROVISION OF LINK CANOPY

Stornoway Port Authority Board has approved expenditure of £47k in order to provide a Link Canopy between the existing covered walkway and the ship's gangway.

The order has been placed with the same company who supplied the covered walkway some 9 years ago, BBS rooflights and Glazed Walkways.

The Board also awarded the contract for civil work amounting to £9,157.70 to local firm Aggregate Industries following a competitive tendering process.

Commenting, Chief Executive John J. Maclennan said, "This is a great improvement which means passengers will be able to embark and disembark the ship without being exposed to the elements".
