AN SULAIRE TRUST

Stornoway Port Authority at a recent meeting refused the application by An Sulaire Trust Ltd to site a steel container unit on a permanent basis between the two existing boathouses at Goat Island.

Members were reminded of the Authority’s policy of not permitting temporary structures on harbour premises on a permanent basis and that other applications of a similar nature had been refused in the past.

Commenting, Chief Executive John J. Maclennan said “It is open to An Sulaire Trust to make an application for consideration to the Authority for the erection of a permanent building at Goat Island”.

EXTERNAL AUDIT

Stornoway Port Authority announces the award of a contract for the provision of External Audit work to the firm of Nicolson Chartered Accountants of 34 Church Street, Stornoway.

Three local firms had returned tenders for the work, with the Board deciding, at a recent meeting to award the contract to the lowest compliant tender submitted.

Commencement of the new contract is effective as from the Financial Year ending 31 December 2005.

NUMBER 1 AND NUMBER 2 PIER REPAIRS

By way of update, Stornoway Port Authority received a report by Harbour Master Captain Torquil Macleod at a recent Board Meeting confirming that contractors Aggregate Industries UK Ltd had completed some 75% of the renewal of the timber fendering on the town’s Number 2 Pier used for the importation of fuel oils and gas.

The Harbour Master confirmed that he was satisfied with the progress to date and he looked forward to the completion of the contract which provided for the same type of fender repairs on the east side of Number 1 Pier.

Local firm Aggregate Industries UK Ltd were the successful bidder for the contract.

NUMBER 3 PIER

Following consultation with principal berth user Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd, Stornoway Port Authority Board recently approved of the installation of two CCTV cameras with digital recording facilities at the town’s Number 3 Pier.

The cameras will be used to improve security at the berth in addition to monitoring vessels arriving and departing from the Pier.

OLD SAIL LOFT AND COMMERCIAL HOTEL

Following application from the Project Developer, Highland Buildings Preservation Trust, Stornoway Port Authority, at a recent meeting agreed to sell an additional small area of ground extending to approximately 5 square metres to the Developer.

The Highland Buildings Preservation Trust required the additional ground in order to move the boundary wall just over half a metre in this area so as to avoid high voltage underground electricity cables.

The Port Authority Board also decided that the Highland Buildings Preservation Trust meet all legal costs association with the transaction.

PURCHASE OF NEW HARBOUR TRUCK

Stornoway Port Authority announces the award of a contract for the purchase of a new harbour truck to Inverness based supplier MacRae & Dick.

Three tenders had been received for the supply of the truck with the Board deciding at a recent meeting to award the contract to the lowest compliant tender submitted.

Delivery of the new vehicle is anticipated early in January 2006.

‘YEOMAN BRIDGE’

At a recent meeting of Stornoway Port Authority Board, members were advised of discussions among representatives of the Port Authority, NHS Eileanan Siar and other local agencies following events of 13 September 2005 when several sick crewmen were landed in the Port from the bulk carrier ‘Yeoman Bridge’ which was anchored outside the Harbour.

As a result of the discussions, NHS Eilean Siar has confirmed that new protocols and procedures covering the landing of sick seamen at Stornoway Harbour will be put in place.

The Port Authority Board noted the Health Board’s intention of taking forward a Major Health Protection Incident Plan and welcomed this initiative together with the introduction of the new protocols and procedures to cover such situations.
