Stornoway Port Authority intends to produce a publication to mark the 140 year span of Stornoway Pier and Harbour Commission between 1865 and 2004.

Throughout these years, the harbour was at the hub of the town, with its throngs of fishermen, herring girls, buyers, coopers, tradesmen, dockers, merchants, naval and merchant seamen, not to mention the ubiquitous "wee coves" appearing somewhere in almost every photograph. It has seen many memorable events through wars, peace, Depression and emigration to Royal visits and carnival days. It has been the gateway to and from the island for generations of Lewis men and women and countless visitors of all nationalities.

The Port Authority is anxious to complete a short historical account of these years which would complement the other valuable local histories recently produced and so would welcome any memories, photographs, anecdotes, memorabilia or other reports concerning the Commission which anyone wishes to contribute.

All contributions will be formally acknowledged and returned as requested.

Please feel free to contact us.
